In July we began work on the extension and renovation of a semi-detached property in Witton-Le-Wear, County Durham. The project consisted of the conversion of the two semis into a single large detached stone built house and featured the addition of two rear extensions to link the backs of the properties, a cat slider dormer and the internal structural alterations necessary to convert the two houses into one.

This was quite a technical and complex renovation which did throw us some challenges, although nothing that we were unable to resolve.  Due to reduced excavation a road had to be formed in order to gain access to the property.  As the whole of the new rear extension is 2metres below the level of the garden a large amount of earth had to be dug out before the Damp Proof Course could be installed and the first slabs poured.  The age of the properties; which were built in the 1800s, also meant the some sections of the stonework had sunk into the landscape and the stones needed to be removed, cleaned and redressed on-site to ensure that they were square and sitting correctly.

Internally, the build involved structural alterations to turn the property from two houses into one home with the addition of a replacement rear roof and a cat slide dormer.  For older properties which may have a fairly low ridgeline, a cat slider dormer allows for maximum space without needing to raise the height of the roof ridge.

We’ve added photographs of the work in progress below and will be adding more images once the project is completed.  To see other examples of the home extensions and renovations work we’ve completed recently, take a look at our Gallery page.
